Spring 2009 Final Exams

Spring 2009 Final Exam Schedule

updated 30 January 2009

A Step By Step Explanation:

Once you have selected your courses for the term, use the Tables on the following page to determine your final examination schedule.

  1. Check all courses in which you plan to enroll, and your alternate choices, to see if they are listed on the Exception Exam Schedule. Note the examination period in which they are to be held.

    Example:
Computer Science 1110 is specifically listed on the EXCEPTION EXAM SCHEDULE for examination period E. You may also want to enroll in Hotel Administration 2243, however, it is also on the EXCEPTION EXAM SCHEDULE for period E. and would therefore create a conflict. Avoid taking both courses during the same semester.

Such courses have been arranged in separate examination periods as much as possible to avoid conflicts, based on input from the departments involved. If your academic needs require that you create an examination conflict, you must first obtain the approval from one of the instructors involved to allow a makeup examination, and agree on when and where this will take place.

  2. Most final examinations will be determined by when the course meets. For those courses not listed under Exception Exam Schedule or Saturday Language Examinations refer to the Standard Meeting Time Schedule. Class Start Time is based on the day and hour the entire class begins during the week, not just your section or lab. All alternative course selections should be reviewed to be certain no conflicts are created should you not get in to your first choice of courses.

    Examples:
BEE 1200 is a course meeting T from 1:25pm - 2:15pm, therefore the Class Start Time for the course is Tuesday between 1:00pm and 1:59pm. On the STANDARD MEETING TIME SCHEDULE final examinations for classes with a Class Start Time in the Tuesday 1:00-1:59am time slot will be held during period S.

AEM 3230 has a requirement that each student register for the lecture and one of several sections. The lecture (or principal course) meets MW from 11:15-12:05pm It does not matter for purposes of your exam schedule which section you register for or what time it meets. The Class Start Time for this course is based on the lecture schedule and is, therefore, Monday 11:00 - 11:59am. The examination period is A.

Class Start Times are based on a weekly schedule. The exam period for a class that meets MR at 10:10am will be based on a Class Start Time of Monday, 10:00 - 10:59am, NOT Thursday, 10:00 - 10:59am.

  3. Finally, to determine what the day and time will be for your final examinations, look at the Final Exam Day and Time Chart and locate the periods in which you will have examinations. The day and time for the examination will be listed along side the period letter. Exam period A is on Wednesday., May 6 from 7:00pm to 9:30pm; Period B is Thurs., May 7 from 9:00am to 11:30am, etc. About the middle of the term a complete Final Examination Course and Room Schedule will be listed on the World Wide Web at: http://registrar.sas.cornell.edu/Sched/finals.html

  4. It is the student's responsibility to enroll in courses that will not create a conflict in the student's examination schedule. If for any reason a student must create such a conflict, the student must first obtain permission from one of the instructors involved and resolve the issues of when and how a makeup examination will be administered.

General Rules Governing Final Examinations:

Legislation of the University Faculty governing study period and final examinations and other end-of-semester exercises:

  1. No final examinations may be given at a time other than the time appearing on the official examination schedule promulgated by the Registrar's Office without prior written permission of the dean of the faculty.

  2. No permission will be given, for any reason, to schedule final examinations during the last week of classes or the study period preceding final examinations.

  3. Permission will be given by the dean of the faculty to reschedule examinations during the examination period itself if requested in writing by the faculty member, but only on condition that a comparable examination also be given for students who wish to take it at the time the examination was originally scheduled. The faculty member requesting such a change will be responsible for making appropriate arrangements for rooms or other facilities in which to give the examination.

  4. The final due date for a take-home final examination can be no earlier than the date appearing on the official examination schedule promulgated by the Registrar's Office without prior written permission of the dean of the faculty.

  5. A course that requires a culminating end-of-semester exercise (for example, a paper, project report, final critique, oral presentation, or conference) in lieu of or in addition to a traditional final examination must advertise at the beginning of the semester the nature of the exercise.

  6. A course that requires a culminating end-of-semester exercise and does not offer a final examination must allow students at least until the date appearing on the official examination schedule promulgated by the Registrar's Office to complete submission of materials associated with the culminating exercise. (For example, a student making a presentation during the last week of classes or during study period will have at least until the scheduled final-exam date to submit a final write-up or equivalent.)

University Policy
Governing Study Period and Final Examinations:

  1. Each course should require that a final examination or some equivalent exercise (for example, a term paper, project report, final critique, oral presentation or conference) be conducted or due during the period set aside for final examinations.

  2. Although not specifically prohibited, it is University policy to discourage more than two examinations for a student in one twenty-four hour time period and especially on any one day. It is urged that members of the faculty consider student requests for a make-up examination, particularly if their course is the largest of the three involved and thus has the strongest likelihood of offering a make-up for other valid reasons, ie., illness, death in the family, etc.

  3. Students have a right to examine their corrected exams, papers, etc. to allow them to question their grading. (Note they have no absolute right to the return thereof.) Exams, papers, etc., as well as grading records, should be retained for a reasonable time after the end of the semester, preferably till the end of the following term, to afford students such right of review.

  4. According to federal law, grades are restricted information and may be released only to the student or at the student's written request. Thus, grades earned on examinations or in courses may not be posted by name. Posting by the student's identification number is also not permissible. Although there is no federal or state legislation that pertains to the manner in which graded work is to be returned to students, the returning of such material should be handled in such a manner as will preserve the students' privacy.
