Personal Counseling Services

Advocacy Center (Domestic Violence, Youth Sexual Abuse, and Adult Survivors of Sexual Abuse)

Helps reduce trauma resulting from domestic violence, sexual assault, and youth sexual abuse by providing emotional support, advocacy, shelter, and related services to adults and youths. Support, information, and referral services are also provided to family members affected by the abuse.

Alcoholics Anonymous

A support group for people with a drinking problem; call for times and locations. On-campus meeting schedules also available through Cornell United Religious Work, 255-4214.

Alcohol and Drug Council of Tompkins County

Campus Life

Campus Life student-residence units are staffed by live-in professionals and paraprofessionals who provide crisis intervention and creative problem-solving through counseling, information, and referrals.

Cornell United Religious Work (CURW)

Religious staff and denominational advisors provide individuals and couples with general, religious, premarital, and crisis counseling and referrals.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Professional therapists offer assessment, referrals, crisis-intervention, psychiatric evaluations, consultation about mental-health issues and alcohol and drug use, and short-term individual, couple, and group counseling for students. Services are confidential. For urgent, but not emergency, after-hours problems, call 255-5155.

Day Care and Child Development Council of Tompkins County

Promotes growth and coordination of quality day-care in Tompkins County. Provides child-care resource and referral services, family and support services, and special teen services, including pregnancy and parenting information.

Empathy, Assistance, and Referral Service (EARS)

Trained volunteers provide free and confidential telephone and walk-in peer counseling and referrals during the academic year.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Provides short-term professional counseling and referral for faculty and staff members with issues related to work, marriage, finance, emotions, alcohol, drugs, and other concerns. Services are confidential. Workplace consultation and training are also available.

International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO)

Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Resource Center

Provides support, education, and referrals on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues. Maintains electronic mailing lists for news of local interest. Offers confidential placement with peers to discuss “coming out” concerns. Groups meet to share perspectives about sexuality and spirituality.

HAVEN

A student-led umbrella organization of diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and straight ally groups that sponsors social and supportive programming and outreach services. Notably, an anonymous instant-message service that offers peer mentoring is provided by faQ Online. A professional advisor is available for informal one-on-one counseling and support.

The Mental Health Association in Tompkins County (MHATC)

Provides walk-in or telephone information, referral, advocacy, and family support services for community members affected by mental health issues. A community educator is available for classroom and community presentations. Also provides volunteer and internship opportunities to students. All services are free of charge.

Sexual Health Services

Confidential counseling and medical services for contraception, emergency contraception, gynecological problems, pap smears, yearly exams, sexually transmissible disease, pregnancy testing and referrals, sexual harassment and rape, sexual identity, sexual dysfunction, relationship problems, HIV antibody testing, safer-sex practices, and saying “no.”

Victim Advocacy Program

Not a crisis center but assists Cornell community members who have been a victim of a crime or traumatic incident, regardless of where it occurred. Services are free and confidential. Program members provide personal support, act as a liaison with faculty and staff members, accompany or transport a victim to service agencies, and assist in identifying and using campus, community, and other resources.
